Achieved Milestones

The project has facilitated field experiment implementation, plot maintenance and data collection for two MSc. Students

Facilitated a workshop that led to the development of three curricula (BSc. Crop Protection and Management, BSc. Landscaping and Ornamental Horticulture and MSc. Agroecology and Climate Change)

Eight training manuals on CSA practices have been developed, reviewed and await upload on CGSpace

Capacity building of 170 farmers i.e. 10 farmer groups have been trained on CSA practices in Igamba ng’ombe sub-County through on-farm and off-farm training

Promoting Resiliency of the Agriculture Sector in Developing Economies in the Context of the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Project of the East/Southern Africa Cluster” has two objectives;

– Improve agricultural productivity by providing and enhancing research and outreach skills of target stakeholders (i.e., students, faculty, scientists, and smallholder farmers).

– Develop and disseminate technologies to enhance global food supply chains and mitigate global climate change.

The project is involved in establishing Farmer Field Schools (FFS) in Agroforestry and Fruit Tree Production in Chuka and Igambangombe Sub-County in Tharaka Nithi County. The cornerstones of the project are to improve agricultural productivity by providing and enhancing research and outreach skills of target stakeholders mainly the students, faculty, scientists, and smallholder farmers. The project has been working closely with small-scale farmers who are organized into Farmer Participatory Research groups (FPRs).

The project is being implemented in three Wards of Chuka (Karingani, Magumoni, Mugwe) and one ward in Igambangombe sub-County (Mariani), respectively. Four farmer participatory research groups namely Kiramba SHG in Karingani, Young Mbuti in Magumoni, Nthima NAALAP in Mugwe and Mwangaza SHG in Mariani] were identified to participate in project implementation.

Equipment worth 9110.05 euros were donated via Development of Entrepreneurial University in Kenya (DEpUK), a project funded by DAAD, to equip a fabrication laboratory (FABLAB) at Chuka University. The equipped fabrication laboratory is expected to help students and staff to engage in entrepreneurial activities geared towards coming up with start-ups. The FABLAB is also expected to aid in teaching of engineering and food technology students or any other relevant discipline. The equipment arrived at Chuka University on 16th March 2022 and were installed between May and August 2022 at Chuka University Electrical engineering laboratory. The equipped FABLAB was in operation from September 2022. The FABLAB has become an indispensable training facility for our engineering students.

The list of equipment delivered as entered in the CU asset register and estimated costing is attached. Letter on alert to pick the equipment from KaRU is also attached.
